Let's start with something we'll happily admit: nobody needs a camel tea towel. No one's survival depends on a cushion with a Bedouin camel on it, or a little stitched ornament of an Emirati lady in her burqa.

Made to be used again (and again). The traditional Emirati way we design, make and pack every gift

Our products are the nice-to-haves. The things you pick up because they made you smile, or because you knew right away who would love them. We think that makes it more important, not less, to think hard about every product we make. If something isn't essential, it should at least be useful, loved, and made to last. It shouldn't turn into clutter by next year.

Nothing wasted, everything used

Before malls, recycling bins and weekly rubbish collections, life in the Emirates ran on a simple rule: everything has more than one job.
Palm trees are a good example. The fruit was food, the fronds were woven into mats, baskets and fans, and the trunks and fronds built the barasti homes that kept families cool through the summer. Very little went to waste, everything served a purpose and was reused or gifted to someone who could use it. 

A good blanket worked the same way. At night it was the bed cover. On a cold desert morning it went around your shoulders to keep you warm. On the move it went over the camel. One object, three jobs, and many years of use. When something finally came to the end of its life with one owner, it was far more likely to be passed on or regifted than thrown away.

We think about our woven throw in exactly that spirit (in fact many Emirati's recognise this design from their own youth). Put it on the end of the bed, wrap it around your shoulders on a breezy winter evening in the majlis, pack it for a desert camping trip or a beach picnic. (We won't judge if it ends up on a camel.)

A gift that keeps finding new jobs

We design every product asking one question: what else could this be?

Our hanging ornaments show this best. Each one is handmade in the UAE from printed cotton, stitched by small scale workshops, with an illustration by Emirati artist Amna Al Saleh on both sides. Here's where one might go over its life: 

• Tied onto the gift wrap as a topper that makes a present look special
• Clipped to your keys as a key fob, or onto a handbag as a bag charm
• Hung on a door knob or on your car's rear-view mirror
• Added to a Ramadan or Eid garland, or hung on a tree during the festive season

It starts as decoration on a gift and becomes a gift in its own right. The packaging keeps going too.

The same thinking runs through the rest of the range:

• Tea towels are screen printed by hand in the UAE and heat sealed for a long print life. Use them to dry your dallah, line a bread basket, or serve karak and luqaimat when guests arrive. They also make lovely fabric gift wrap.
• Tote bags are made from heavy cotton canvas, "spacious enough for the souk, sturdy enough for the beach". That's one less plastic bag every time you go shopping.
• Postcards are sent once and then kept. Pin them on a noticeboard, frame them in a row, or tuck them into a book as a bookmark
  

Leather that comes full circle

Our leather charms follow the same old rule of using every part.
Each charm carries original artwork by Emirati artist Amna Al Saleh and is made and packaged in the UAE. The hanging loop is made from camel leather cut-offs left over from making our camel leather key fobs. Instead of throwing those offcuts away, we use them to finish the next product. Nothing wasted, everything used.

The leather comes from a UAE-based tannery that builds sustainability into every step:

• Where the leather comes from. The hides are collected locally and are a by-product of other industries. Otherwise they would be thrown away.
• How it is tanned. The tannery keeps its process cleaner and uses no solvents in production.
• What happens at the end. Real leather is biodegradable. When a charm finally reaches the end of a long and well-travelled life, it breaks down naturally.

That last point matters more than most people realise. Many leather alternatives sold as "vegan leather" are made from PU (polyurethane). PU is a petroleum-based plastic. It doesn't biodegrade, it tends to crack and peel quickly, and making it depends on harsh chemicals. A label can sound kinder than the material behind it.

A leather charm has plenty of jobs to do. Use it to give your gift wrapping a premium look, then it becomes a gift in its own right. You can clip it to your handbag, tie it onto a suitcase so you can spot it on the carousel, add it to your keys, or hang it from your car mirror. It's a small gift made to go everywhere with you, for years.

Plastic light, by design

Packaging is where a lot of "nice to have" gifts cause the most waste, so we've tried to be strict with ourselves here.

Most of our paper and card is left unlaminated. That glossy plastic coating on a lot of cards and boxes looks nice, but it makes the paper very hard to recycle. Leaving it off means our card sleeves, backing boards and swing tags can go straight into paper recycling once you're done with them. We only laminate heavy use products such as our playing cards to ensure they live a long life with you, playing the same local game over and over again.

Many products need no plastic at all. Our linen tea towels, for example, arrive folded around a stiffening card and wrapped in a sustainable card sleeve. No plastic.

When a sleeve is needed, we choose compostable where we can. Some items, like greeting cards with lots of lose components (such as our Emirati novelty happy birthday glasses), need protecting on our retail partners shelves on their journey to you. In those cases the sleeve we use is usually compostable, not conventional plastic.

We're not perfect and we won't pretend to be. But each time we design a new product, the packaging is part of the design brief from day one, not something we think about at the end. Every time we do a replenishment of an existing product or a new collection, this forms part of our thought process. It's not an afterthought and its not advertised.

Made here, made to last

Making in the UAE wherever we can is part of this too. Working with local makers means shorter journeys, smaller batches and a close eye on quality. As well as being a genuinely authentic khaleeji visual cultural gift. A gift that is well made gets used for years, and that is the most sustainable thing a product can do.

So the next time you give a Little Majlis gift, we hope it has a long and busy life. Topper, then key fob, then Eid decoration. Offcut, then charm, then suitcase tag. Tea towel, then gift wrap, then serving cloth. Throw, then shawl, then picnic blanket.
