Before the glass towers and wide boulevards, there was the freej. A traditional Khaleeji neighbourhood of low coral-stone houses clustered together around shared courtyards and winding lanes, where families lived in close community, children played in the streets and neighbours knew each other by name. The freej was not just a place to live. It was a way of living, rooted in the Gulf values of community, generosity and belonging.

Today the freej lives on in memory, in story and in the hearts of everyone who grew up in one. It also lives on in the beautifully preserved heritage neighbourhoods along the Creek in Dubai, most notably Al Fahidi (also known as Bastakiya), where the traditional wind towers, coral-stone houses and narrow lanes give visitors a glimpse of the UAE as it once was. A little note from us: these tiles are crafted by a small-scale traditional artisan workshop in the Netherlands, because despite searching for over two years, we haven't yet found a local UAE manufacturer who can produce them.
