It carried people and goods across vast stretches of sand where nothing else could survive, connecting communities, enabling trade, keeping families together across the distances of a tough and beautiful landscape. A camel caravan, camels walking in single file, roped together, loaded with everything a journey requires, was the original supply chain of Arabia. Patient, resilient, unhurried and utterly reliable.

Today, camels still hold a place of enormous pride and affection in Emirati culture. They race at purpose-built tracks across the UAE, reaching extraordinary speeds with robot jockeys perched on their backs. They feature in beauty competitions (yes, really) where their proportions, colouring and features are judged with the same seriousness as any livestock show anywhere in the world. And they remain one of the most beloved symbols of this land, appearing on everything from the national crest to the Little Majlis leather charm collection.
